TODAY’S TOPIC TITLED, “IS THIS LOVE?” CONTINUES WITH JI.
Wow! It has been wonderful starting this very hot topic. I have been receiving commendations across the globe on twitter, facebook, 2go mobile chat, email and even my phones have been beeping with calls and text messages just because of this topic. You know what? I found out that so many youths and married people are consciously or unconsciously traumatizing themselves in their relationship with the opposite sex. Now, what am I trying to say? A lot of people simply do not know the difference between love and lust, love and infatuation , my heart aches. Little wonder so many persons find themselves regretting their so called love life or marriage, they weep and soak the bed day and night with tears from their lachrymal gland, wondering if an end will come. Let me ask you the question again; Is this love?
THE HISTORY OF LUST
By definition, lust is an intense desire for something or enjoyment of something. I will trace the history of lust to the ancient days of Centaurs in Greece, Buddhism and then Asmodeus of the Hebrew, just to mention a few. Now let us go to a brief history of lust in this short discussion.
CENTAURS
Centaurs, in Greek mythology, a race of monsters believed to have inhabited the mountain regions of Thessaly (Thessalia) and Arcadia. They were usually represented as human down to the waist, with the lower torso and legs of a horse. The centaurs were characterized by savageness and violence; they were known for their drunkenness and lust and were often portrayed as followers of Dionysus, the god of wine. The centaurs were driven from Thessaly when, in a drunken frenzy, they attempted to abduct the bride of the king of the Lapiths from her wedding feast. An exception to their bestial behavior was the centaur Chiron, who was noted for his goodness and wisdom. Several Greek heroes, including Achilles and Jason, were educated by him. Lust condemned and associated with violence!
BUDDHISM
The ethic that leads to nirvana is detached and inner-oriented. It involves cultivating four virtuous attitudes, known as the Palaces of Brahma: loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. The ethic that leads to better rebirth, however, is centered on fulfilling one’s duties to society. It involves acts of charity, especially support of the sangha, as well as observance of the five precepts that constitute the basic moral code of Buddhism. The precepts prohibit killing, stealing, harmful language, sexual misbehavior, and the use of intoxicants. By observing these precepts, the three roots of evil—lust, hatred, and delusion—may be overcome. Lust condemned and associated with violence!
Asmodeus, in Hebrew demonology, the chief of the demons, occasionally identified with the prince of demons, Beelzebub. He figures largely in later Hebrew tradition, appearing in the Book of Tobit in the Old Testament apocrypha as an evil spirit possessed of great lust. He is represented as having loved Sarah, daughter of Raguel, and as having slain seven men who were successively married to Sarah. Tobias, who intended to marry Sarah, succeeded with the help of the angel Raphael in exorcising the demon. Raphael pursued Asmodeus to Upper Egypt and bound him, enabling Tobias and Sarah to live in peace. In talmudic legends, Asmodeus is associated with Solomon, whom he aided, notably in building the temple. He is also regarded as the cause of the excesses ascribed to Solomon. Lust once again condemned and associated with violence!
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ABOVE HISTORY OF LUST
You may want o wonder why Joshua is getting involved in history instead of writing on marriage and relationship. This brief history was necessitated by the trauma that so many youths and even the married are into, that is LUST and not LOVE. Lust has always been associated with violence. Come to think of it, you hear about cult clashes, assassination and kidnap as a result disagreement over a relationship between an opposite sex. In my first degree programme, I knew of two female friends who became worst of enemies over an affair with a guy who I should describe was in lust with both of them in school, they went to the extent of fighting openly and mutilating themselves with knives in the hostel. I would like to ask the question again; Is the is love? Now, more recently in Lagos Nigeria, a very familiar story of a couple who gave their marital vows and have been married for many years, but Mr Arowolo and the wife who are now in police custody, got themselves into this mess because of assault. Is this love? Furthermore, a man beheaded his wife in Nigeria over adultery just 2 months ago, I can recall vividly that their marital pictures were made available for the public to view in nationwide media. Is this love?
My guests, this is a complex topic, I believe we are already heading somewhere with this second post. Let me conclude today’s post by informing you that LUST and INFATUATION are siblings. Avoid them at all cost . I will write more on both of them in my next post. I will like to write once again to my fellow youths and to the married ones across the globe that the true definition of love is in this food for thought; Love is kind. Love is not wicked. Love is not mindful of the present. Love sees the future. Love is patient. Love is eternal. Love is not lust. Love is not immoral. Love leads to greatness. Love is not egocentric. Love is sharing. Love is persistent. Love is consistent. Love is mutual. Love sacrifices. Love is not violent, only lust could be violent. Love could be painful, but there are many gains. Love could be for a party and the other not getting it, but you just can not force love but convince the other about it. You can not and should not force someone to love you, you can share your feelings, but check if it is not infatuation, yes check yourself because infatuation is a temporary passion, an intense but short-lived and irrational passion for somebody or something. Love is not temporal. Love is permanent. Love cares. Love is godly. See you in my next post for more.
