Ladies and gentlemen welcome to part 2 of the new series – “dealing with criticism.” In my last post I clearly stated that criticism could be painful (destructive) or gainful (constructive), and that in any way it can make us better when handled rightly. Moreover, criticism in either way could be distracting, hence, it takes one who is focused to understand the trend and stay on track. You have got to remain focused to what you are aiming at or what you are assigned to do, amid criticism. As you give ears to criticism, don’t get so distracted that you now give in to mistakes – don’t fall to the words of destructive critics as a result of loss of focus. Zero your mind to complete concentration to your task, be calm, be collected, listen-listen, learn-learn and adjust-adjust (rightly if need be).
Suffice it
to say that some critics could be deliberately and desperately keen on dissuading
you from doing the right thing all with the intention of leading you to the
wrong direction, you have got to watch out for such people, you can listen to
what they may be saying, weigh their views on a psychological scale with the
help of (a) more reasonable associate(s) – share your view and the views of
your critics with reasonable people for wise counsel; from there you can be the
judge as you compare their views with available standards if any.
AS A
SUBJECT
Your
superior may deliberately want to test your resilience or ability to be
dynamic, total focus is very necessary. Ask questions, learn and adjust when
there is need, so long you are doing the right thing in accordance with set
standard. Never you get nervous to start making mistakes. Consult-learn,
consult-learn and improve yourself efficiently.
AS A
SUPERIOR
You may
find yourself in a situation whereby your subjects may be criticizing you openly
or surreptitiously. In either case, remain focused, don’t get haughty, try to
hear from them and weigh their views because they may be afraid to speak to you
directly, calmly talk one on one to any of them or to all of them, be
accessible – your subjects could be strong helpers to developing yourself and
becoming a better person. When you give ears to criticism, you have the dynamic
ability to weigh the views of the critics with the support of reasonably close
associates, and judge them. Don’t completely get out of track because of
criticism and throw out the views of your subjects, don’t get too angry if the
criticism is destructive, remain focused and collected – you already have the
ability to defend your actions when you know what you are doing is right.
We are not
done with this topic, see you soon for part 3 of the series, “dealing with
criticism.”

RALPH WALDO EMERSON’S QUOTES (PART 2)
Talent alone cannot make a writer. There must be a man behind the
book.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
Representative Men, "Goethe; or, the
writer"
We are wiser than we know.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
Essays, "The Over-Soul"
The only reward of virtue is virtue; the only way to have a friend
is to be one.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
Alcohol, hashish, prussic acid, strychnine are weak dilutions. The
surest poison is time.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
Society and Solitude
A good indignation makes an excellent speech.
Attributed to Ralph
Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
'Tis a short sight to limit our faith in laws to those of gravity,
of chemistry, of botany, and so forth.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
The Conduct of Life, "Worship"
In skating over thin ice, our safety is in our speed.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
Essays, "Prudence"
The use of history is to give value to the present hour and its
duty.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
Society and Solitude, "Works and
Days"
The hearing ear is always found close to the speaking tongue.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
English Traits, "Race"
There is less intention in history than we ascribe to it. We impute
deep-laid, farsighted plans to Caesar and Napoleon; but the best of their power
was in nature, not in them.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
Spiritual Laws
Nature tells every secret once.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
The Conduct of Life, "Behavior"
If a man make a better mouse-trap than his neighbor, though he
build his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door.
Attributed to Ralph
Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
Often rendered as "The world will beat a path..."
Every man is wanted, and no man is wanted much.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
Essays, Second Series, "Nominalist and
Realist"
The centuries are conspirators against the sanity and authority of
the soul. Time and space are but psychological colors which the eye makes, but
the soul is light; where it is, is day; where it was, is night; and history is
an impertinence and an injury if it be anything more than a cheerful apologue
or parable of my being and becoming.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
Essays, "Self-Reliance"
In analyzing history do not be too profound, for often the causes
are quite superficial.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
Journals
History is the action and reaction of these two, nature and
thought—two boys pushing each other on the curbstone of the pavement.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882)
U.S. poet and essayist.
The Conduct of Life, "Fate"
Every man contemplates an angel in his future self.

U.S. poet and essayist.

KEEPING THINGS SECRET IN RELATIONSHIP OR MARRIAGE –IS IT ADVISABLE?
(PT. 1 With Joshua Osayuwamen Osagie)
Thank you so much for your contributions to the opinion poll questions for the past 2 years on this blog. Starting from this post, your contributions will now be published on the facebook page http://www.facebook.com/joshuaosayuwamenosagie (visit, like, view people’s opinions and get more inspiring posts with lots of rewards there).
Back to the topic of discussion, keeping things secret in friendship, relationship or marriage: There is a big difference between friendship, relationship or marriage with respect to commitment, intimacy and affection – believe it or not. Secrecy is also different from having reserve for issues. In friendship, relationship or marriage, openness is key to a long lasting time together, love, trust, understanding and sharing. I will not advice someone to be secretive in any way, but I can advice someone to have reserve, by that I mean keeping someone in a sort of suspense with understanding or keeping something for latter use or unveiling at a better time. Being secretive all round could be implicating, trusting you becomes difficult and intimacy weakens, but having reserve is saying things half way and joking over it, playing down further discussion openly and plainly putting your mate in suspense. By all these, there can still be trust and intimacy.
Take for instance, you can be in a relationship whereby you intend to test your mate on issues of your financial discipline and understanding, you can decide to tell your mate you don’t have so much to give at a particular point in time of requesting whereas you could afford to do 10 times that request; you observe your mate’s response and know the type of person you are in relationship/friendship with, all these are done with understanding and reserve, not secrecy.
Openly communicate and share your feelings, secrecy is dangerous. In marriage secrecy is more dangerous and many marriages have hit the rock because of secrecy.
SOME THINGS ARE NOT TO BE TOTALLY RESERVED
- Your weaknesses and limitations (health, finance, character, mannerism, etc)
- Your needs
- Your goals and vision
- Your potentials
- Your strengths
In all these, wisdom
profits much. See you again soon for part 2 of this series as we go into
details of the above points. See you then.

>>ORBIT FEATURE 5> LANDMARK DISCOVERIES: INVENTION OF THE CLOCK IN 1286
AND MORE SCIENTIFIC APPROACH IN THE DEVELOPMENT, PLUS INVENTION OF PRINTING
PRESS.
FIRST INVENTION OF THE CLOCK
Two other medieval inventions, the clock and the
printing press, also have had a permanent influence on all aspects of human
life. The invention of a weight-driven clock in 1286 meant that people would no
longer live in a world structured primarily by the daily course of the sun and
the yearly change of the seasons. The clock was also an immense aid to navigation,
and the precise measurement of time was essential for the growth of modern
science.
MORE SCIENTIFIC BASIS OF INVENTION OF THE CLOCK
Christiaan Huygens
(1629-1695), Dutch astronomer, mathematician, and physicist, born in The Hague.
His numerous, original scientific discoveries won him wide recognition and
honors among scientists of the 17th century. Among his discoveries was the
principle (later named after him) that states that every point on the front of
an advancing wave is itself a source of new waves (see Optics). From
this principle he developed the wave theory of light. In 1655 he found a new
method of grinding and polishing lenses. The sharper definitions obtained
enabled him to discover a satellite of Saturn and to give the first accurate
description of the rings of Saturn. The need for an exact measure of time for
observing the heavens led to his applying the pendulum to regulate the movement
of clocks (Clocks and Watches). In 1656 he devised an eyepiece for the
telescope that bears his name. In Horologium Oscillatorium (1673) he
determined the true relation between the length of a pendulum and the period of
oscillation and developed theories on centrifugal force in circular motion that
assisted the English mathematician Sir Isaac Newton in formulating the laws of
gravity. In 1678 he discovered the polarization of light by double refraction
in calcite.
PRINTING PRESS INVENTION
The invention of the printing press, in turn, set off a social revolution that is still in progress. (The Chinese had in fact developed both paper and printing—including textile printing—before the 2nd century ad, but these innovations did not become generally known to the Western world until much later.) The German printing pioneer Johannes Gutenberg solved the problem of molding movable type about 1450. Once developed, printing spread rapidly and began to replace hand-printed texts for a wider audience. Thus, intellectual life soon was no longer the exclusive domain of church and court, and literacy became a necessity of urban existence.
