Joshua Osayuwamen Osagie - Host Blogger

Ladies and gentlemen, you are welcome to our new series as promised titled, “setting goals and achieving them.” By the grace of God, before the end of this series we shall all be fired up to greater heights in all our pursuit as long as we make integrity our bedrock in life. Goal setting remains a vital part of the success pathway and we get motivated when we set realistic and attainable goals. While many of us may not be new to the SMART goals (an acronym for 5 characteristics of goals: Specific-Measurable-Attainable-Relevant-Time Limit), I am here by inspiration to go beyond the five and actually outline as many tips to successful goal setting and accomplishment in this series. The SMART goals have to be explained here right now.

SMART GOALS ELUCIDATED

Before we proceed any further, it is pertinent we decipher vividly what the SMART goals stand for. Many persons have given various meanings to the acronym but as I stated earlier, we are using the above meaning right here;

·        SPECIFICITY: For there to be a successful goal setting and accomplishment, you can not take away clarity of the goal. By that I mean your goal has to be definite and clear. Ambiguous goals do not pay off as you would end up making life difficult for yourself. Your goal should have a precise direction and in the event of starting anything towards it, the end result could be seen even from the start. Endeavour to set specific goals. Take for instance a business plan without a blueprint or a student preparing for an exam without the full course outline, insufficient direction inhibits success. That is specificity of a goal.
·        MEASURABLE: If you can not measure your goal, then you can not take note of your progress report. A goal has to be measurable in magnitude, number, date, score, volume, as the case may be. Setting your goal means you actually want to measure your success level or rate. Your goal “for the week” could actually be that you want to cut down your expenses on wants and needs using a scale of preference, it could be a daily analysis, weekly, monthly, etc, and by that your goal is measurable in dates and in volume of money you expend. That is how to set a measurable goal. Your success can therefore be measured over time.
·          ATTAINABLE: Ask yourself this vital question: Is my goal attainable? There is no doubt that goal setting motivates. However do not get overambitious to set goals that can not be achieved realistically as you could end up abrading yourself instead of motivating yourself. That is not to say your goal should not be challenging, it is a matter of being realistic. It is best when your goal is challenging and at the same time realistic, easy goals will definitely not bring out the best in you. You have got to strike a balance there.
·        RELEVANCE: Your goal should be pivotal to your life, your career and your world. That is the essence of goal setting. Your motivation increases if the goal you are setting would make a great impact to you and your world and place you on a pedestal of greatness. Don’t set irrelevant goals.
·        TIME LIMIT: Your goal should have a time frame which will spur you on. Again your motivation increases when you understand that you are racing against time. That sense of urgency is built and your work rate will increase per unit time as your target draws closer. You can not wait to enjoy your success as the time approaches zero. Time frame is key to goal setting.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the introductory post and I have given you my word that many tips beyond this SMART five would be coming your way in this series subsequently. Welcome to the month of August! See you again in a matter of days. God bless you.

~~~~ORBIT FEATURE 4>>>> LANDMARK DISCOVERY DISCOVERY OF BLOOD TYPES
At the dawn of the 20th century, the Austrian physician Karl Landsteiner made the extraordinary discovery that human blood could be grouped into several different types. This discovery made possible the transfer of blood from one human to another—a medical breakthrough that has saved countless lives.
Prior to Landsteiner's pioneering work, there were few reports on the transfer of blood from one human to another. In 1668 Jean Baptiste Denis, the French physician to King Louis XIV, dared to transfuse a man with sheep's blood. The man eventually died and Denis was arrested for murder.
Transfusions were quickly banned in France and England. Other attempted transfusions using human blood were frequently unsuccessful, and patients often died due to blood incompatibility.
In 1900 Landsteiner made the brilliant observation that human blood contains what he called isoagglutinins. These proteins are capable of agglutinating, or clotting, the red blood cells of blood samples containing isoagglutinins different from their own. He thus was able to divide blood into three types: A, B, and O. A rare fourth type, AB, was later discovered.
Landsteiner showed that the sera of two blood samples containing the same isoagglutinins would not clot the red cells of either blood. This discovery permitted the development of a system for safe blood transfusions. For this gift to humankind, Landsteiner received the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1930.
